iPod touch still best of class, wins Editors’ Choice

November 5, 2009

Although the journalists handing out the award withheld judgment until they could get a look at offerings from Archos and Microsoft, consumers had already made up their minds, buying twice as many of Apple’s “funnest iPod ever” in the company’s fourth fiscal quarter as the same period as 2008. However, if you want an iPod touch, too, but have an aversion to paying the full MSRP there are hot deals to be had.

The journos at News.com, after due deliberation that included waiting until they could check out new models from Microsoft and Archos, have awarded the iPod touch yet another Editors’ Choice award.

“Well, all the reviews are in now and the iPod Touch remains king of the hill,” writes News.com’s Donald Bell. “Whether you’re buying one for yourself or giving it as a gift, the third-generation iPod Touch does not disappoint.”

For those of us who have purchased an iPod touch — first, second or third generation — this isn’t news; it’s an affirmation of what we already knew.

Pay less, play more

That said, if you’ve got the wants, but lack the cash there’s more than one way to put one of these beauties in your pocket and you don’t have to pay full retail. Check out the Apple Certified Refurbished iPod touch specials page where you’ll find refurbished first and second generation units from $139. I’m a big fan of refurbished Apple gear and have had zero problems with any of the dozen or so Macs and iPods purchased this way.

Also, just about everyone besides Apple that sells new iPods does so at a discount. Granted, these mark downs aren’t huge, but they often include free (after rebate) swag, such as cases, chargers and, of course, engraving. Three easy choices for discounted iPods are MacMall (new second gen units from $177.99), Amazon (refurbished third gen from $174.99) and ClubMac (new third gen from $188.94).

Be sure to check the details and terms of each vendors offerings as shipping charges, sales tax and freebies often vary greatly.
