Rumor: $99 iPhone 3GS by Christmas

By Ronald O Carlson

With the world going mad, mad, mad for the Motorola Droid and HTC Android from Verizon, AT&T is purportedly looking for a strategy to counter the hype. Then again, slashing the price of Apple’s flagship phone so early in the product cycle might be more than Steve Jobs is willing to give this holiday season.

Boy Genius Report reports that two sources at AT&T have said the carrier wants to start selling an 8GB iPhone 3GS for $99 before Santa sets out in his sleigh. One of these sources added that the move, should it come to pass, is designed to combat Droid mania.

That’s one way of explaining Ma Bell’s desire to rejigger Apple’s iPhone product line. Another possible explanation is that the 8GB iPhone 3G, last year’s product, just isn’t selling as well as the carrier hoped or needs.

Of course, no one outside of 1 Infinite Loop knows how well the entry-level handset is selling here or abroad because Apple doesn’t break out sales by model.

Sleigh bells ring, are you listenin’?

Moreover, with a $99 8GB iPhone 3GS on the market, wouldn’t a $49 8GB iPhone 3G seem (rank speculation) a logical step? What a lovely stocking stuffer that would make!

Whatever the case, if AT&T gets its way, I can’t think of any better way to start (and win) a war…

What’s your take?
