Apple to start writing mobile games?

Apple to start writing game software?There are some clues lurking about that Apple may be thinking about getting into the computer game business, following up on the newfound popularity of the iPhone and Touch as gaming platforms.

During the summer at a major event billed primarily as music-related, Steve Jobs and company made a big deal out of their mobile devices being major gaming platforms. That was followed almost immediately by derision from the makers of dedicated gaming devices, such as Nintendo and Microsoft. Since then, it has almost become conventional wisdom to say that the move to Apple for many gamers is a very wise one, since they are then able to carry a single device for making calls, listening to music, running business apps, (oh, yes) and playing games.

Now, based upon an Apple human resources help wanted ad, some people are saying that Apple may want to boost that image by also becoming a developer of game software. Most of that speculation is being based on the following Apple want ad:

The interactive media group is looking for a skilled software engineer who wants to work as part of a small highly motivated team to work on interactive multimedia experiences on the iPhone and iPod Touch. The position on the team is to help design and implement interactive multimedia experiences on the iPhone and iPod Touch. The position also requires a creative thinker who can contribute and comment on the design process as well as being flexible enough to aid in all aspects of production such as asset management and able to work to a deadline.

Looking for skilled engineer with the following background:

Strong C / C++ / Objective-C / iPhone background preferred
3-4 years of video game development experience, shipped at least one AAA title
Passionate gamer
Skills in audio systems, graphics pipeline, and network programming a plus
Ability to work in small dynamic team

That may be a little thin to start predicting that Apple is getting into the computer game business, as is noted in an IntoMobile story. There are any number of reasons that Apple could want a developer on the iPhone – Touch team that has experience with game development. They may want a gaming proponent on the team to help work on the operating software, or to act as a team ombudsman for gaming, or just to evaluate games for the iPhone and Touch. But wouldn’t it be fun if Apple really did jump into game development with both feet?

Do you think Apple should start producing computer games?
