Qualcomm confirms it’s talking chips with Apple

November 18, 2009

Recent rumors have pointed to a “worldmode” iPhone sometime next year, which would mean Verizon network compatibility. Today, we get independent, if off-handed, confirmation that the mothership is at least talking with the chipset maker at the center of this tantalizing possibility.

Bloomberg is reporting comments by Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs in Hong Kong indicating that recent rumors that Apple is building a worldmode iPhone built around a CDMA/UTMS chip from the handset chip maker.

“We continue to discuss it, but haven’t made it yet,” Jacobs told Bloomberg. “Hopefully, in the future, we will have the opportunity.”

Before you get too excited, Jacobs is only confirming that his company has been talking with Apple not specifically about supplying a worldmode chipset. That said, there are lots of reasons other than this for the two companies to be working together.

Qualcomm is the world’s biggest maker of handset chips, which are already in use in various Windows Mobile and Google Android devices.
