South Korea’s KT Corp. has over 53K advance iPhone orders

November 28, 2009

Fears that the iPhone would receive an icy reception on the Korean peninsula, like it has in China, have been put to rest as Apple’s wireless partner announces healthy prelaunch customer commitments.

KT Corporation, Apple’s hand picked network partner in South Korea, claims that more than 53,000 iPhones have been pre-ordered ahead of today’s official launch.

“This is phenomenal,” Hwang Sung-jin, analyst, Prudential Investment and Securities. “The iPhone’s release will definitely stiffen competition for local companies such as Samsung and LG.”

Until a recent landmark ruling by the Korean Communications Commission opened the cell market, the iPhone had been prohibited in that country, making it perhaps the only economically advanced where Apple’s game changing device couldn’t be purchased.

Further, there had been fears that iPhone would receive a less than warm welcome in South Korea much like it had in China — only 5,000 units sold there in the device’s first official week on the market.

Nevertheless, as the early numbers out of Korea, where the device can be had for “free” under a subsidized plan, show success hasn’t been denied, just delayed for two years.
