Add-on security for the iPhone
If there has been a knock on the iPhone over the last couple of years, it has been that it did not offer the same level of security as the RIM Blackberry line, and was thus not as good for corporate applications.
There is some relief on that front, due to the release of an iPhone software client from Good Technology, the leader in smartphone security applications. This new client for the iPhone is said to bring the Apple handset up to the security level of the Blackberry models, at least inside the Good apps, meaning that it will now be possible to have a highly secure smartphone with the wide variety of features and apps that come with the iPhone, not to mention the customer satisfaction levels.
The Good client increases the security if the iPhone by running as an app, which means that the added security capabilities apply only to the Good software, which includes e-mail, calendar, and contacts, according to an Infoworld story. This means, of course, that you will no longer be using the default iPhone e-mail, calendar, or contacts apps that come standard with the phone. That situation, obviously, can help create a safe divide between your personal and business data (which your corporate security officer will like) though it also means that data exchange between your business and personal information and apps won’t be as easy. Moreover, you won’t get the same capabilities as the smartphone’s native apps. For example, the Good e-mail reader does not support e-mail folders — a critical need for many users — even though Apple’s Mail app does. Notes are also not supported.
Still, the Good Technology apps will make your iPhone as secure as the best Blackberry in Good’s limited applications, which is great news for business users that want more from their smartphones. Good also released a client for Android phones, so the iPhone and Androids will be on similar footing on the security front with the Good apps. This is bound to be good news for the business users (and wannabe users) of the iPhone and Droid, the two most likeable smartphones around.
