Toshiba announcement means 128GB iPod touch likely coming
From the technically feasible department comes news that the “funnest iPod ever” will probably be gaining storage capacity as Apple’s flash supplier for the iPhone and iPod touch has announced a new chip with twice the capacity as the one currently used by the company. The only question remaining is that of timing, and that likely depends entirely on price.
Toshia has announced the available of a 64GB NAND chip. Toshiba embedded flash memory can be found in current iPhone and iPod touch models.
This likely means that the storage in Apple’s hot-selling handhelds will likely double sometime in the perhaps not too distant future. The question of when is likely entirely dependent on when Toshiba’s pricing aligns with Apple’s target component costs.
More is better in the Spring?
As noted by Wired, the iPod Touch usually has more memory than the iPhone is that, despite its thinnovative form factor, there is more room inside, which means the touch can fit in two chips where the iPhone only has space for one.
With a camera-equipped iPod touch expected by some in the Spring—the video only module used in the iPod nano—a possible timeframe for a higher capacity model is set.
Of course, nothing’s certain until Apple actually ships, but ‘twould be good if the mothership started upgrading the touch when the components are ready as opposed to waiting until its annual September iPod product bump…
What’s your take?
