AT&T says, Operation Chokehold had ‘no impact’

December 19, 2009

The fateful day has come and what of Fake Steve Jobs’ call to iPhone to rise up and bring Ma Bell’s data network? Apparently not much other than a generous amount of media and blog attention, but that’s nothing to sneeze at.

Once again, we turn to ABC News for the latest on Operation Chokehold, what began as a bit of caustic sarcasm from Dan Lyons (a.k.a. Fake Steve Jobs) snowballed into an actual protest movement that attracted nearly 4,500 followers on Facebook. The aim was to bring AT&T’s data network to its knees by consuming as much data as possible.

Did they succeed? Not exactly.

When contacted for comment, AT&T would only say, “We saw no impact.”

Well, perhaps carrier’s network didn’t feel the pinch, but the company’s mangers and marketing people are still working to get a handle on the very real problems that led to this outpouring of real anger by the company’s iPhone using subscribers.

Thereupon, Peter Serven, a 21-year-old Web designer from San Antonio, Texas behind the Operation Chokehold Facebook page, said it was a huge success.

“The goal is to send a message to AT&T,” he said. “It was a pretty strong message.”

Well, for a little while anyway, people outside the AT&T vs. iPhone user echo chamber seemed to be paying attention. Let’s see if Ma Bell can put any distance between itself and this incident, or if Operation Chokehold was just the first salvo in a long war…

What’s your take?
