Many iPod touch users still not upgrading to iPhone OS 3.x
Whether it’s the $5 cost or a simple lack of interest, owners of Apple’s “funnest iPod ever” aren’t very interested in upgrading. Although more than half of the iPod touches tracked by a web metrics firm are running iPhone OS v3.x, it’s likely most is organic growth traceable to new product purchases.
When iPhone Blorge last visited this topic, only about 1 percent of iPod touch owners had installed iPhone OS 3.0. Now, according Chitika Research, that number has grown to 55 percent whereas 95 percent of those with iPhones have done the deed.

Although iPhone OS 3.x for the iPod touch “only” costs $5 and provides a lot of features—copy/paste, in-app purchases, improved search, improved default apps, iTunes U organization and the ability to buy certain iPhone OS 3.x-only apps on the App Store—it’s obvious that many users aren’t seeing the value.
Thereupon, given the millions of iPod touches Apple has sold between now and June 17th, when iPhone OS 3.0 shipped, it seems likely that a lot of the growth has come from new sales and not people upgrading.
I think the upgrade is absolutely worth it and use the improved features daily, although I do regret paying the full $10 upgrade price…
