A Verizon iPhone in 2010?

December 25, 2009

A Verizon iPhone in 2010?New rumors have surfaced via the Apple supply chain route that Apple will be fielding a CDMA version of the iPhone in 2010, which would be a sure sign that Verizon will soon be selling the Apple handset.

Apple has been in and out of talks with Verizon for quite some time, though the iPhone is still an AT&T exclusive in the U.S. With incredibly loud and widespread squawks from AT&T users about the AT&T network and its problems, and especially since Apple has been doing away with exclusivity in other world markets, many observers are surprised that Apple has stuck with AT&T. One of the big reasons may be that the current iPhone is not compatible with Verizon’s CDMA network.

All of that may change if this latest rumor is true. The reports from the supply chain surfaced last week, according to an Ordoh.com story, beginning with unnamed sources from inside Apple’s Taiwanese supply chain. These sources say that Apple has pre-ordered parts from Qualcomm that would allow the Cupertino manufacturer to build CDMA handsets, which would in turn allow them to sell phones through Verizon and other world vendors with CDMA-based networks.

It is fairly certain that many iPhone users would cheer this news, were it true, and equally certain that many would abandon AT&T for Verizon once the iPhone was available on their far superior network and their contract was up on AT&T. This writer was a happy Verizon user for many years until he had to have an iPhone, and would go back to Verizon in a shot the minute it became possible. There is no real comparison between network coverage or customer service between Verizon and AT&T. It would be absolutely marvelous to be able to get back to what is generally seen as the best wireless network in the U.S.
