AT&T customer service: ‘Try using Skype’

December 26, 2009

The last thing anyone expects to hear from a customer service representative is an honest answer. That’s just what one unhappy iPhone user got when he wrote to complain about dropped calls.

The Consumerist brings us the story of Simon, who while visiting Brooklyn — yes, a tree grows there — suffered an inordinate number of dropped calls. Hey, it’s AT&T in New York City, what did he expect?

Well, when he wrote to Ma Bell customer service, the rep that he spoke gave him some unexpected advice:

From: ATTCustomerCare Date: Thu, Dec 24, 2009 at 2:52 PM Subject: RE: FW: AT&T Facebook – More… To: Simon [redacted]

I believe you can make phone calls over Wi-Fi- but it would be done through the Skype application, I’ve spoken to some customers while using it.

Wha d’ya think of that? Although probably the best solution given the company’s notoriously poor voice service in Gotham, you’ve got to wonder if the rep who dared to reply honestly still has a job with AT&T…

What’s your take?

Give the AT&T employee a christmas bonus and a medal. He deserves it for being a free thinker instead of being a corporate lackey/jack@$$.

I agree, but he’ll probably get shown the door instead…
