How to: Enable parental controls on an iPhone, iPod touch

December 31, 2009

So, you got your kids an Apple handheld computer — a.k.a. iPhone or iPod touch — for Christmas and you’re concerned about the evil it might bring into their lives? Here’s a quick, easy and absolutely free tutorial on how to restrict access to the Internet, unsavory apps, pervy YouTube videos and adult iTunes content.

In addition to being best-of-class media players, Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch are both excellent handheld computers with the ability to access almost any content that’s available on the Internet. For the parents of younger children, this superbly integrated, high-level functionality can also be a source of concern.

Also, for older kids, you might concerned that they’ll go to town on the iTunes store, purchasing hundreds or perhaps thousands of dollars of music, movies and more—it can happen in just a few minutes.

Turn off the temptations

From the iPhone or iPod touch’s home screen:

• Tap Settings > General > Restrictions

• Then Enable Restrictions and enter a four-digit PIN. Once you’ve done that, you can set restrictions on Safari, YouTube, etc.

Also, scroll down to set restrictions on individual content types

The really go thing about iPhone OS 3.x parental controls is that they’re surprisingly granular for a handheld with the ability to not only turn entire functions on and off (i.e. YouTube, Safari, iTunes, etc.), but also managed individual types of content, such as movies, music, podcasts, TV shows, etc.

Granted, it could be a lot more granular, more gradations of control vis-a-vis specific content types would be useful, but I think Apple’s done a rather good job overall.

To do that, you will have to reset it. I suggest making sure all your apps, music, etc… are saved on Itunes. Then do a reboot. To do that, all you have to do is hold the home and sleep button simultaneously for ten seconds. Hope this helps!
