If one just considers the numbers, Ma Bell’s commitment to build out and improve its wireless network is impressive. In fact, the nation’s number two carrier has said it will boost spending by $2 billion to add more towers and backhaul, with an emphasis on improving things in San Francisco and Manhattan.

The volume of user complaints about the coverage and service provided by AT&T’s wireless network have grown, if anything, faster that the number of AT&T iPhone subscribers, which has been rapid indeed.

This has been a bone of contention for years already and even the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) got into the act after the open networks group Free Press urged an investigation. Still, it’s been nearly four months since AT&T agreed in principle to allow VOIP over 3G on its network.
