Facebook 3.1 brings push notifications

January 7, 2010

The single most popular app for the iPhone finally got push notifications, as well as the ability to sync Facebook friend info with your Mac’s OS X Address Book.

Facebook 3.1 (free, iTunes) is now available and brings with it a long awaited feature, push notifications. These can be customized so that you’re notified (or not) when you receive new messages or someone comments or likes one of your links, photos, etc.

However, as is usually the case when Facebook changes something, there’s a sinister subplot (or just a garden variety incompetent bumble) to bedevil the faithful. That is, as noted by iTunes user Optophobia, Facebook 3.1 will replace “…all of your contact pictures with Facebook profile pictures even if you tell it not to.”

This is a non-issue for me, but if you’ve spent a bunch o’ time customizing the images attached to your friends, this is gonna be a problem.

Also, for all of you iPod touch owners out there who haven’t upgraded yet, Facebook 3.1 for iPhone requires iPhone OS 3.x.
