Gameloft claims over 10 million paid iPhone downloads

January 7, 2010

When it comes to apps and games, there’s the iTunes App Store and, well, no one really comes close in terms of units or revenue. Here’s one game and app vendor that’s mining the iPhone gold rush.

On Tuesday, Apple’s App Store downloads surpassed 3 billion. Yesterday, as if following the same cue, Touch Arcade reported on Gameloft’s continuing good mobile gaming fortune as that company says iPhone and iPod touch users had downloaded and paid for their products more than 10 million times.

“We have had a remarkable year on the App Store,” said Michel Guillemot, chairman and CEO. “Our success is defined not only by great production values, but a vested interest in bringing to market games that are commercially friendly and appeal to a mass consumer base. Taking into account that the App Store is only 18 months old, 10 million paid downloads is an achievement we are quite proud of.”

Popular Gameloft titles, many of which grace the App Store Top 100 for the iPhone, include UNO, James Cameron’s Avatar and Oregon Trail, all of which to sell for $4.99 or more.

Are there any examples of companies striking it rich writing apps for Android? Inquiring minds want to know…
