Boxee remote: Sauce for the goose

January 10, 2010

If you enjoy television — I mean really love the boob tube — then you really, really need to check out Boxee, which is available for the Mac, Linux and Windows. However, whether you watching on a MacBook on the couch or the 52-inch flat panel on the wall, even if it’s just to maintain form, you’re gonna need a remote.

The Boxee beta is now available and it’s been getting mostly rave reviews. I have it, use it and consider it to be the best home theater software available on any platform.

Thereupon, because using Boxee to watch TV means you’re going off the reservation, you will need a new and dedicated remote and that’s where Boxee remote comes in super handy, not only as an actual physical remote but also as a way to geek hard on your iPhone or iPod touch.

At first blush, Boxee remote seems overly simple (i.e. hasn’t been updated since June, 2009), but you need to get in and try Gesture Mode. No, not what you do to other drivers during the commute to and from work, but something even better:

When in Gesture Mode, hold in your thumb down and drag the Boxee logo around to move/down/right/left. Drag it to the edge on the screen and hold it there to navigate long lists and then click on the logo to perform an action.

Yes, Boxee remote still needs some work. Still, the underlying application is so good (think crispy, tasty Beijing Duck), the sauce (i.e. the remote) only needs to provide the barest utility.

So, download the software + app, queue up some shows (i.e. G4, YouTube, Discovery, MTV, Wired, more) and then tell Comcast, Time Warner or whoever you’re letting gouge you for cable TV to just go away (you’ll need the broadband), ’cause Boxee’s here and ready to play…

What’s your take?
