Palm’s Rubenstein: ‘I don’t have an iPhone. I’ve never even used one’

January 11, 2010

Honestly, I’m pretty sure he shouldn’t sit around all day obsessing about Apple — he’s got enough on his plate at Palm to keep him busy for several lifetimes as things are. Still, as my father likes to say, “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.”

Kara Swisher at AllThingsD had former Apple iPod chief and current Palm CEO Jon Rubenstein on stage for a bit o’ chit chat where the two made this exchange:

“We don’t pay that much attention to Apple….I know it sounds really strange,” says Rubinstein.

“Really?” Kara replies. “You don’t worry about the iPhone?”

“No, I really don’t,” Rubinstein answers.

“I don’t believe you,” says Kara.

Rubinstein: “I don’t have an iPhone. I’ve never even used one.”

Oddly, he then goes on to give the answer he should have — the iPhone’s great (blah, blah), Apple’s great (blah, blah) and my time at Apple was great (blah, blah).

Seriously, Apple’s got a world changing phone and paying proper lip service, regardless of what you actually think of it, can’t hurt you.

Thereupon, it wouldn’t surprise me if investors saw this as a reason to spank Palm. Then again, if it’s really true there’s no such thing as bad publicity…

What’s your take?
