Flash on iPhone demo begs ‘Why?’

January 14, 2010

In a year when hackers are expected to make Adobe Flash and Acrobat the focus of their unwanted attentions, there are still people out there who want Flash on the iPhone. I guess it’s a matter of taste, like having bits of metal pushed through your skin or trying the Jackass movie stunts at home.

For those of you who missed the prediction, 2010 is the year when analysts expect Adobe software to displace Microsoft software as the hackers’ attack vector of choice. Thereupon, reports of some new and particularly nasty Flash or Acrobat vulnerability come and go with the weeks as do Adobe’s attempts to keep up with patches — they’re trying.

Further, there’s also the prediction that smartphones and their data-hungry users will increasingly be the target, a problem already affecting Android users, of hackers and their phisher friends.

Now, along comes this Flash on iPhone demo from the open source “Gordon” project (Get it? Flash Gordon), which employs a JavaScript-powered Flash run-time. Looks nice, huh?

Well, forgive my cynicism, but using JavaScript (itself a frequent hacker target) to surreptitiously download from the Internet (hello) and run Flash on an iPhone sounds criminally stupid, rather like plying yourself with drugs and alcohol at a rave and then having unprotected sex.

Sure it’s fun while you’re doing it, but the hangover and rash are something else entirely…

What’s your take?

    LOL, that’s a bit melodramatic isn’t it?

  4. RL:

The fact, that there won’t be any Flash support in iPhone, doesn’t make flash bad. Fanboyism is a disease you know…

  5. Eddy CJ:

@John the iphone isnt dead at all, nobody buys a phone purely for flash support.

  6. Gordan's Dad:

You’re a fucking tool buddy, first it doesn’t download flash using javascript. It’s a fucking runtime for the flash bytecode in the swf.

Learn something, then mouth off with your silly, unfounded, jackass opinions you cocksucker.
