AT&T lowers unlimited iPhone data price

AT&T lowers unlimited iPhone data priceUnited States iPhone users in search of good news might wish to note that AT&T has cut the price of its unlimited data plan! The service might not be any better, but at least the price is going down.

AT&T has announced a change in the pricing for its unlimited data plan for smartphones, doing so in response to  a similar cut in data prices made by arch-rival Verizon. IPhone users have been paying $100 per month for unlimited voice calling plus another $30 for unlimited data. After today, with the change in plan pricing, AT&T will be charging $100 a month total for unlimited voice and data. In addition, Family Talk plans that offer unlimited voice and data for two phones will be $180 for the two-phone plan, with more phones costing more money. The price of unlimited texting  remain unchanged, at $20 for unlimited plans and $30 for Family Talk Plans, according to Powerpage.

This is, of course, good news for most customers and one positive outcome of the current wrangling between Verizon and AT&T, featuring seemingly unending dueling television ads. Since the ads are getting a bit tiresome, with so much spin involved that the two are beginning to look like a fast-moving  binary star system, it’s nice to have at least one positive outcome that we can take to the bank. Also positive is the fact that these changes can be made on line by AT&T customers and they will carry no penalties of any kind, including contract extensions.

Smartphones and their data plans have always carried premium prices with the major wireless carriers. It may be that situation is changing now that the market is maturing a bit. It is clear that neither AT&T or Verizon would be cutting deeply into their profits to make this reduction in data prices. Now that smartphones are no longer a novelty, Moore’s Law almost guarantees that prices will begin to drop.
