February 4, 2010

One of the few remaining items on über geeks must-have iPhone apps is about to get real. With this one now scratched off the list, can we know look forward to tethering — perhaps that just too much to ask for?

Das New York Times reports that AT&T, in its infinite wisdom, has chosen this particular moment to approve streaming of video over its 3G for SlingPlayer for the iPhone ($30).

“Since mid-December 2009, AT&T has been testing the app and has recently notified Sling Media — as well as Apple — that the optimized app can run on its 3G network,” says the carrier.

SlingPlayer has been available on the iPhone for some time already, though content would only stream over Wi-Fi as AT&T vetoed its use on 3G because it would potentially overwhelm that network.

Yes, you must also have a SlingBox and be paying that monthly just have the privilege of paying again for SlingPlayer for iPhone. Still, if it’s mobile TV you’ve got the brain, this has been called a killer application…

What’s your take?
