iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 3 released, then retracted

February 24, 2010

The latest version of the iphone software development kit (SDK), including iPad tools, was released but was temporarily pulled back for unknown reasons, then was once again made available on the development site.

Apple released the new SDK, which contains the software tools which allows an iPhone / Touch app to be easily converted to an iPad app, on Tuesday. After just a few minutes, according to an Apple Insider story, the kit was withdrawn from the site without any explanation from Apple, then was made available again shortly thereafter, according to an Apple Insider story. According to Apple, the new SDK allows “existing iPhone projects to include the necessary files to support” the new Apple tablet computer. It may be safely assumed that there are a lot of developers awaiting these helpful SDK features, especially given that the release of the initial model of the iPad is imminent.

This newest version of the iPhone operating system also includes what Apple is calling a new Universal Application binary format for applications. This component will allow developers to deliver a single application that can take advantage of all of the features of the iPhone, iPod Touch, and the new iPad by placing the code into a single package for easy distribution and management. This should make it much easier for developers to produce software that will run on all three Apple mobile platforms. The official Apple announcement said, “iPhone Developer Program Members can start developing the next generation of innovative applications for iPad with iPhone SDK 3.2 beta, now available in the iPhone Dev Center.”

For a short period of time, developers are left with a multiple SDKs to work with, depenting on exactly what they are doing. If they are working with the iPhone and Touch only, they are using v.3.1.3. Only members of the iPhone Developer Program may also download and use the new 3.2 beta, which includes support for the iPad. These development tools should be unified once again when the final build of 3.2 is released, which is expected to be soon.
