Will the iPad be as popular as the iPhone?
With the release of the Apple iPad tablet computer just a few weeks away, it makes sense to ask if the iPad can duplicate the level of success of the iPhone and iPad Touch, which have been wildly popular since their release.
Taken together, as befit devices that look like twins, the Apple iPhone and iPad touch are the most rapidly adopted electronic devices in history. The Apple mobile twins beat out other wildly popular devices like the Wii and the Sony Playstation for top honors in terms of rapid adoption by lovers of gadgets, according to a Christian Science Monitor story. With that sort of success behind those two devices, will it be possible for the new iPad to emulate the level of success that has been enjoyed by the iPhone and the Touch? If for no other reason than the iPad is a product from Apple, and adding that it looks like a big brother to the iPhone and Touch, it is very difficult to count the iPad out as a big winner.
On the face of it, the tablet marketplace has not proven very receptive to success in the past; one of the companies that has failed to produce a tablet market winner is Apple itself. But since then, Apple has revolutionized the portable music industry with the iPod and changed the cell phone market forever with the iPhone. So, despite a few drawbacks, it seems quite possible that Apple is perched on the brink of a huge success with the iPad. If the iPad fails, it will not be for lack of consumer interest or the track record of its smaller siblings.
Still, it is very difficult to believe that a device that is working to forge a brand-new marketplace, and which sets the price of entry to that market by consumers at between $450 and $829, will emerge as a market larger than the iPhone. Everybody needs a cell phone in this day and age, the smarter the better. Despite the pre-release consumer interest in the iPad, not everyone needs a tablet computer. It is likely that the iPad will be a significant success for Apple, and that they will control the tablet marketplace for a year or two after release, but it is unlikely that the iPad will sell in the volume range of the iPhone or Touch. The new kid on the Apple block will have success, but will not match the performance of its older, smaller siblings.

I have to agree, I think that the iPad is a far wider ranging tool and as a result will exceed the coverage of the iPhone. I think that, if marketed and developed correctly, the iPad could even replace desktop computing and laptop computing to become the standard mode of presentation, communication and organisation.

Never in a million years, ipad/iphone is very much a consumer brand, and consumers are primarily interested in mobility. I know this article was written round about when the iPad was originally launched and I have the beneft of hindsight with me here.
But I always thought that the iphone was a much larger market than the ipad.. Any day.
