iPhone captures the old, young demos
As I sit amid the melt and slush of a sunny Philadelphia Sunday afternoon news comes that Apple’s zeitgeist defining smartphone is particularly popular with the under 17 and over 55 demographics. Android and webOS, on the other hand, score better among the flabby middle.
AdMob (via Ars Technica) has published smartphone user demographic data covering the iPhone, Android OS and webOS devices, which reveals the following:
- • 14 percent of iPhone users are 55 or older
— 8 percent of Android users have reached the minimum retirement age
• 17 percent of iPhone users aren’t old enough to buy cigarettes
— Android and webOS users under 17 combined accounted for less than 10 percent of sample
• 65 percent of iPod touch users are 17 or under
Before we get too worked up about these numbers and start reaching for unwarranted conclusions, it bears mentioning that AdMob’s survey group included only 963 and those folks self-selected via an opt in invitation delivered via their handsets. Further, Blackberry users weren’t part of the survey.
That said, the easy take away for iPhone haters is that the device is popular among the young fashion trash — more money than brains — and the geriatric crowd, sold on Apple’s legendary prechewed ease-of-use.
Nevertheless, with tens of millions of young iPod touch users queued up and ready to buy their first smartphone, the future of mobile computing is Apple’s to squander as none of the other players — Google, RIM, Palm — have a gateway product that binds young users to their platform. Get ‘em when they’re pups…
What’s your take?
