Netflix for the iPhone in the works

March 3, 2010

It probably will not happen quickly, but an iPhone app for the uber-popular Netflix service is being considered by the movie-rental and streaming giant, a move that could complete the Netflix hat trick.

Netflix has already conquered the television, DVR, computer,  and game console worlds. It has become almost ubiquitous, a thought in the minds of film fans everywhere whenever the word “movie” is uttered in any context. One of the last bastions of a Netflix-free existence is the iPhone, and if a recent customer survey sent out by the company is any indication, the iPhone is about to move inside the Netflix domain. The survey about Netflix on the iPhone, sponsored by Netflix, is similar to previous surveys about the service on the Wii and the Playstation, both of which are now supported by Netflix, as reported by PCWorld.

The survey was apparently quite detailed and clear about what the app would do. The only shortfall appears to be that it would only be available over Wi-Fi, which makes sense given the strain that the AT&T 3G network is already under. The rest of the service is all upside: iPhone owners would be able to watch films and television shows instantly, with no advertisements; films would take less than a half minute to load, and the only cost would be the regular Netflix subscription, nothing extra. The provision of software for the Wii and Playstation followed their surveys by about perhaps a year, so it may not be time yet for iPhone Netflix fans to hold their breath.

Not all of that time will be spent writing an app. It is likely that mobile devices were not included in the original deal cut by Netflix with the providers of heir films, so they will need to go back to the table and change their deals to include streaming to the iPhone and other mobile devices. That is likely to be complicated and time-consuming. But in the long run, being able to while away some wait time watching a good film on your iPhone (or iPad) will make it all worthwhile.
