reMail rereleased as open source
Google purchased reMail several weeks back and now the crew that made that software will be working on other things. Although their iPhone app’s status has gone from active to pulled and now open sourced there’s still some question about the future of the mobile mail search software.
Recently, Google purchased reMail, an app for searching email on the iPhone, and then immediately pulled it from the App Store. Speculation about the searchzilla’s reasons for the purchase and removal abounded with some whispering that it was just the latest in an increasingly hot shooting war between Apple and Google.
Now, a blog posting from reMail founder and CEO Gabor Cselle has put that line of reasoning to rest by announcing the iPhone app has been rereleased as open-sourced.
Last month, we announced reMail’s acquisition by Google. Since we’ll be focusing on other projects at Google, we also decided to remove reMail from the App Store … we looked at a number of options to make it available in some form. We decided that the best option was to open source the code, which is now available on Google Code as remail-iphone under the Apache 2.0 License.”
Granted, more than a few applications have been opened sourced with the net result being that the software died a quiet death. How reMail will fair remains to be seen, but at least the code’s out there and available to whomever wants to use, tinker or otherwise have their way with it…
What’s your take?
