iPhone 3.2 Beta 4 SDK includes three-finger gestures

March 11, 2010

Using three digits to swipe on the iPhone or iPod touch’s diminutive screen might be problematic for some folks — like many men, I’ve got big paws. The iPad, however, is an obvious application given its larger screen size and more powerful applications.

Cleve Nettles at 9 to 5 Mac has been crawling around on his hands and knees inside the iPhone 3.2 Beta 4 SDK, and found some interesting stuff. Specifically, there are references for three-finger gestures, which could be coming to the iPhone, iPod touch and upcoming iPad tablet computing device, that aren’t available in the shipping version (3.1) of the mobile operating system.

How these will be put into practice by Apple and its frothy legion of dedicated developers isn’t known. However, the iPad with its larger display and more powerful applications, including the mobile version of Apple’s iWork productivity suite, would seem an obvious destination.

Even for large-fingered folks, like myself, the addition of simple three-digit input — i.e. open a specific app or sync now — could be a major boost…

What’s your take?
