Full multitasking coming in iPhone OS 4, say insiders

March 11, 2010

One of the few remaining reasons to jailbreak an iPhone could be gone with the arrival of iPhone OS 4.0, which is expected sometime this Summer, leaving tethering as the one marquee feature still not available to U.S. users. Are you still jailbreaking?

Though it’s still early days in the development cycle, according to AppleInsider, new features in the upcoming iPhone OS 4 are coming into view with the most important being full pre-emptive multitasking.

People with a proven track record in predicting Apple’s technological advances tell AppleInsider that the Cupertino-based company has developed a ‘full-on solution’ to multitasking on the iPhone OS but offered no specifics on how the technology would optimize resource conservation and battery life — two of the most critical issues surrounding the matter, alongside security.”

The sources have withheld specifics about how Apple knock these issues down in order to protect the innocent.

Of course, the current iPhone OS is actually multitasking capable, though Apple has blocked most apps from using that functionality in order to boost security and battery. Currently, the iPhone’s calling, SMS, email, iPod and voice recorder apps can access multitasking.

Apple giveth

That said, the existing use of multitasking, as well as push notification functionality, could make the appearance of systemwide background processing appear seamless — it’ll just feel like more instead of, boom, something new.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that iPhone users, like their Android and webOS slinging cousins, will become a lot more vulnerable to hackers and malware.

Are you an iPhone jailbreaker? If yes, will the availability of multitasking be enough for you to stop jailbreaking your iPhone? Or, is it tethering that keeps running with the dark side…

What’s your take?

    Really?
I tethered mine just to try it and it worked great.
