Games: Star Hunt for iPhone is easy, engaging

March 16, 2010

Did you like Myst? Well, here’s a simple, affordable and entertaining game in a similar vein that’s not demanding and just right for those times you find yourself waiting online at the bank, airport or the checkout.

Cogniflame has released Star Hunt (iTunes, $1.99), a new game title where you’re mission is to find and collect stars, as well as the keys needed to open various door in the 3D, two-story house where the game takes place. You’ll be searching in rooms, drawers and cabinets to find all 200 stars.

Yup, that’s a lot of stars, making this a title you’ll be able to pick, put down and pick up again for quite awhile. It’s low-impact fun that’s just distracting enough to while away the minutes during your mass transmit commute, time waiting in line or just lounging on the couch.

That said, Star Hunt isn’t without its distractions, given that the decor of the home you’re moving about, especially walls, is rather consistent, it’s easy to forget which corner you’ve gotten yourself back into. Also, the interface only allows north-south-east-west movement, which can be kind of annoying when you want to go that way.

Still, Star Hunt played smoothly on my second generation iPod touch. Whether I was bending down to look for something or navigating ’round the house, the images displayed clearly and jumping.

Choice is good

Although the audio in Star Hunt — birds and environmental sounds — is pleasant enough, the ability to listen to tunes from your iTunes music library (or even multiple choices in the game) would be a very welcome addition.

Veering back into the positive, social networking — share your achievements with friends on Twitter and Facebook — via the OpenFeint network is a nice addition, which is also a gateway to other games and pastimes.

All-in-all, for a buck-99, it’s hard to go wrong with Star Hunt. It’s easy to play, engaging and the graphics are nicely rendered. Further, with 200 stars spread over a large, attractive 3D house, you’re gonna get plenty o’ play out of it…

What’s your take?
