Apple to reconsider Pulitzer-winning cartoonist’s app

April 16, 2010

There’s going to be a lot of noise made about this, but my immediate impression is that, like Playboy, award-winning cartoonist Mark Fiore will be given a pass because he’s a known quantity. That he won a Pulitzer Prize probably doesn’t hurt, though.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is doing an about face on decision not to approve political satirist and cartoonist Mark Fiore’s iPhone app. Fiore  says that he has been asked to resubmit the software for (re)consideration by the company’s App Store nannies.

“I’m a sucker for Apple, and I do like what they’ve done. I’ve always felt like they would be the type to support political cartooning,” he said, adding, “I feel kind of guilty — I’m getting preferential treatment because I got the Pulitzer.”

Previously, the company had rejected Fiore’s iPhone app on the grounds that it “contains content that ridicules public figures.” Thereupon, whereas Apple banned racy apps that displayed “girlie” pictures and the company gave Playboy a pass on that stricture because the magazine is a known and respected publication, it seems that Fiore will get similar treatment.

Quid pro open standards

Neverthless, if I were Apple, I might insist that Fiore change his site a bit as it’s dominated by a steaming pile of Flash, making it unviewable on the iPad and by anyone else who has chosen not to install the troublesome and insecure multimedia plugin…

What’s your take?
