Android outsells the iPhone in Q1

May 11, 2010

I suppose this news was inevitable as just about everybody but Apple sells some iteration of an Android phone, including AT&T. Further, both Android and the iPhone gained ground on market leader Blackberry, which still doesn’t offer a competent Web browser.

Quoting fresh NPD market data, PCWorld reports that smartphones running some version of Google’s Android mobile operating system accounted for 28 percent of sales in the first quarter. The iPhone snagged 21 percent and Blackberry garnered 36 percent.

However, when it comes to installed base, Android still significantly lags the field with 9 percent compared to Apple’s 25.4 percent. In fact, Android still trails Windows Mobile, which has been in free fall for years.

Another interesting tidbit in the data is that iPhone sales remained flat whereas Android showed strong growth in the quarter. Windows Mobile, Blackberry and Palm’s WebOS all saw sales fall.

As noted in the lead, every major U.S. carrier — T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T and Verizon — not only offers, but also heavily promotes multiple Android phones.

Is there a problem?

Whereas AT&T’s data and phone services have improved greatly over the last year, Apple’s still selling the same models it introduced last Summer. Moreover, the stolen fourth generation iPhone prototype doesn’t seem to be a world beater.

Yes, there will be a better implementation of multitasking than Android (i.e. battery), it will have a resolution doubled display (LCD, not OLED) and there will be a front facing camera (video conferencing).

Is that enough to staunch the Android’s rise or has the iPhone had its day in the sun…

What’s your take?

Don’t expect to see many Androids around next year– the phones are so bad, they have to give them away. Verizon and others are stuffing the channel with buy one/get one deals.

Fifty-plus Smartphones combined finally out-sells one Smartphone and this is suppose to be a shocking revelation?

If the iPhone were available on Verizon, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. Once people figure out that Android is a more hype, and the iPhone is the real deal, Android will fade. The iPhone has already shown staying power. How many companies against one? Plus, it’s the same old story, look at profit share, not market share. Apple’s in business to make a great products for a premium price. That’s fair. Anyone can gain market share by selling two for one, or whatever. Big whoppee do — what does that get you in the end?

I know many people who are all waiting for the new iPhone to come out soon in June/July time frame. The lull you are seeing is only a short pause before the next roll out. Furthermore, Apple sold 8.5 millions iPhone this past quarter with only 2.7millions being activated by AT&T. The rest of the millions have been sold internationally and it is safe to conclude that the iPhone is a very successful product line for Apple.

The result comes from a survey and not actual sales so can the numbers be trusted.

NPD is just guessing the numbers.
