iPhone, Android one-two in survey

May 28, 2010

In another new industry survey of smartphone users, the Apple iPhone and its operating system took first place, followed by the Motorola Android phone and the Android operating system itself.

ChangeWave Research, an industry analytics firm, has come out with the results of their most recent smartphone survey. The survey included 1,009 users who had purchased their handsets during the previous six months, according to a Computerworld article, and the results say that iPhone users are the most satisfied among smartphone owners, at a 77 percent level, while Motorola Android handset owners are second happiest at 64 percent. In terms of operating systems, 71 percent of the users of the iPhone OS were very happy with their OS, while 67 percent of Android OS users were very happy.

These figures would seem to reinforce the notion that the iPhone is the most popular among smartphones, while the Android phones are rising fast in the estimation of their customers. It is interesting to note that in the operating system section of the survey, Palm’s (now H-P’s) WebOS came in third and that the RIM / Blackberry operating system was well behind the top three. On the handset front, owners of HTC handsets came third, with a satisfaction level of 51 percent, ahead of RIM / Blackberry with a 46 percent satisfaction rating.

Once again, the biggest area of dissatisfaction among iPhone owners was the requirement to use AT&T as a wireless provider. ChangeWave also has studied AT&T’s role as the exclusive wireless carrier of the iPhone in the U.S., coming to the conclusion in early May that more than half of Verizon Wireless subscribers surveyed would buy an iPhone if it were available with Verizon. It is astonishing that AT&T seems to still have an exclusive contract with Apple for the iPhone, and based on industry reports over the last few weeks, will continue to hold that advantage at least in the short term.
