Opera Mini on 2.6 million iPhones
Sounds like a lot, right? Well, it does until you reckon that Apple’s sold somewhere North of 75-million iPhones and iPod touches, and that Opera Mini isn’t yet available for the iPad. Still, the little browser that does is proving to be a popular alternative for people outside the 3G wireless cloud.
Opera Soft, never shy about tooting their own horn, claims that their mobile browser now resides on more than 2.6-million iPhones worldwide, a number they achieved in about two weeks — kudos.
“The iPhone has become the third most popular platform for Opera Mini in just a matter of weeks,” says Jon von Tetzchner, cofounder, Opera Software. “The popularity was enough to make the iPhone the most popular Opera device in the U.S., toppling the BlackBerry line, and fifth in the U.K.”
Thereupon, Opera claims that U.S. downloaders were also the most likely to use Opera as a result. Americans led both in the sheer number of unique users as well as pages viewed and the amount of data sent through those sites.
Tastes like chicken!
Well, I’m an Opera Mini downloader, too. However, after a brief flirtation with the alternative mobile browser, it languished on my iPod touch’s fourth and usually forgotten fourth screen until it was deleted.
And, I doubt I’m alone. Of the numerous reviews I’ve read, few have actually taken to Opera Mini in any meaningful way.
So, is anybody out actually using Opera Mini as their primary (or even backup) mobile browser on the iPhone?
