Skype 2.0 for iPhone adds 3G calling

May 29, 2010

For a very long time, it was Apple and AT&T standing in the way of Skype over 3G calling. Back in January, that roadblock was removed, but the functionality hadn’t appeared until just now — it’s time to upgrade, baby.

Skype 2.0 for iPhone (iTunes, free) finally at long last brings home the 3G calling bacon. After Apple approved the feature in January, everyone expected this functionality to appear immediately.

However, although 3G to 3G calls are available and free for now, Skype says that will only be the case until the end of August. Thereafter, the VOIP calling company will start charging for the privilege.

And, what’s up with that? According to AppAdvice reports that 3G to 3G calling doesn’t cost Skype anything, which means the fee will be collected not out of necessity but because they can.

Smoke ‘em while you can…

What’s your take?
