AT&T killing unlimited iPad [and iPhone] data plans

June 2, 2010

Ma Bell isn’t cutting unlimited data plans. They’re not raising their price, no. They’re actually introducing new, lower pricing and offering their happy, happy users even more choices1

AT&T has announced two new data plans for iPad and iPhone owners that are priced at $15 (200MB) and $25 each (2GB). Gone entirely are the unlimited data plans of yesteryear, though iPad and iPhone owners that continue to subscribe will continue to enjoy the original unlimited $29.99 plans.

The one sliver of light in today’s announcement is that AT&T will now allow iPhone tethering. However, this will require the $25 plan, which Ma Bell is calling “DataPro,” and an additional $20 a month.

Tethering will roll in June with the arrival of iPhone OS 4. What isn’t explained is whether or not $25 + $20 actually nets users unlimited data, which would seem to be a requirement for tethering as 2GB is less than lots of people use in a day let alone a month.

AT&T is still offering “free” Wi-Fi hotspot access for iPhone and iPad customers.
