Here’s an idea so natural you’ve got to wonder why no one’s tried it before (Apple’s lawyers might be able to give a reason or two). Still, with or without Cupertino’s blessing, there are millions of these AT&T-free handhelds in circulation, making it a tempting target for anyone with the tech, and stones, to try.

Back in June, a brute force attack on AT&T’s 3G network yielded more 100,000 iPad user email addresses and little more — the press went nuts. Now, a free wallpaper app for Android phones has sent the phone, subscriber identifier and voicemail numbers of potentially millions of users to China, wow.

Whether it’s the lack of compelling games or the increasing crush of spammy apps installed by carriers, people that have purchased Android-based devices aren’t particularly keen on buying another one. Naturally, just the opposite is true of the smartphones made by Apple.

Sometimes big changes come in small dot-update packages. Case in point is the Skype for iPhone release, which lets users run the popular VOIP app in the background while simultaneously sloughing off a charge that wasn’t set to be collected until August.
