Top 5 things about my new iPhone 4

July 9, 2010

Apple and FedEx were kind enough to deliver my new iPhone 4 ten days ahead of schedule, though I did have to drive to FedEx to get it, and as a result I have some first impressions to get off my chest.

Moving from an iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4 is pretty darned impressive, especially from a 3G running iOS4 and therefore slower than normal. After 12 hours or so with my shiny new Apple handset, it is incumbent upon me to build a Top 5 list, in to especially coherent order, about the newest addition to the pile of tech toys that surround me, as follows.

Activation and installation – iPhone upgrades have never gone well for me. Some have been disasters. This one, including activation, was furiously fast and flawless. A couple of minutes to get on the air and less than an hour to transfer my cell phone, photo, app, and music lives to the new handset, and I was done. And the process even restored some data that had been lost in my 3G upgrade to iOS4.

That display! – The difference in clarity between the 3G and the iPhone 4 displays is just as breathtaking as brother Steve said it would be. Twice the resolution really rocks.

The Cameras – I have used both cameras, for stills and videos. I took a photo in the dark, using the new LED flash. I zoomed. I took hundreds of photos with my 3G, and can see that I will take thousands with the 4. The best camera is the one you have with you, and that is really true now.

The Speed – The speed at which this new handset moves is impressive. TomTom is so much faster to load onto the phone and to operate that I may even grow to despise that app less. All of the others fairly fly through their tasks, with never a perceptible pause.

Multitasking – Oh ,what a difference apps running in the background makes. Even the new Plurk app by Ryan Lim seems to like it there, as does Weather Bug and many of the other apps I use often. That saves a lot of time loading apps. And, honestly, it does not seem to eat a lot of battery.

And, as a bonus number 6 on the list, the infamous “death grip,” the much-ballyhooed iPhone 4 antenna gap, does not seem to have made the trip from China to my pocket. It does not seem to matter how I hold the handset, or whether I purposefully and firmly close that gap, the reception does not waver, either as shown by those pesky signal bars or by dropped calls. So far, I’m good.

thank you for writing this. i was wondering if upgrading from a 3G to the iPhone 4 would be any good, but after reading this i will upgrade to the iPhone when it is released in my country :D

Yeh I got mine yesterday and as you say, it was super fast setting up and re-syncing all of my apps, music, videos etc (40 minutes) and the display clarity is truly amazing.

I also love the camera, far less lag, quick-focus and also a flash make it worth using because lets not deny it, the 3G camera was terrible.

I also like the design, it feels weighty and it’s also much nicer to grip.

I too found that my 3G slowed down horribly when I got the update but the iPhone 4 just takes it and my god are the results pleasing!

    Good list btw!
