App Store has more than 50K active devlopers

August 29, 2010

There lots of folks who believe that sooner or later developers will flock to Android because that’s where the majority of users are. However, for the time being at least, devs are going to follow the money and that means writing for the iPhone and iPad.

Palm is history and Blackberry probably isn’t long for this world either. Yeah, Microsoft’s brewing a “new” mobile OS and it’s gonna be great.

And, then there’s Nokia, which is never been much more than an afterthought on this side of the pond.

Which brings us to Android and iPhone, and an interesting juxtaposition of numbers. Devices running Google’s mobile OS will soon outnumber iPhone, but that’s only part of the story.

What the above chart doesn’t show is that the iPhone market, in addition to being more lucrative, is also more than 2.5 times bigger than the Android space (250K vs 95K apps). Naturally, that’s led to more developers being attracted to iOS.

    • • Total Active Apps (currently available for download): 252,227
      • Total Inactive Apps (no longer available for download): 49,696
      • Total Apps Seen in U.S. App Store: 301,923
      • Number of Active Publishers in the U.S. App Store: 50,545

According to a Mashable writeup by Christina Warren, Android developers numbered just over 10,000 back in July. Additionally, she found that only about 1,400 developers had ever written for both platforms, which would seem to indicate that there’s not a lot of mobility between the two ecosystems.

And, that pretty much sums it up — there’s more money to be made in the iOS space, which has led to more developers writing more apps for the iPhone, etc.

  1. Martin Hill:

Probably the fact that iPhone developers have made 50x more income from the iOS App Store ($1 billion) compared to the $21 million that Android developers have made from the Android Marketplace over a similar time frame highlights why there are still so many more iOS devs. .

Piracy rates of 50 – 90% and an easily bypassed copy protection scheme on Android would also not have helped.
