A shortcut for setting up email on the iPhone 4

September 2, 2010

With the proper use of iTunes, setting up an email account on the iPhone is exactly like setting it up on your computer (as long as it’s a Mac), because that’s actually the easiest way to do it. Read on for more.

It is, of course, possible to set up an email account on your iPhone 4, just by going to “Settings”, tapping on “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” and then on “Add New Account” at the end of your existing email account list, if any. After that, you just need to go through the same motions as you would if you were adding an email address at your computer, which is our point. Why should you do something this keyboard-intensive on that little tiny virtual keyboard when you could do it at your main computer, which you will be doing anyway, and then letting iTunes do the work?

Simply use your email client (if you use Apple Mail) to set up your email accounts, or a new email account, and then just sync the phone to your computer. All you need to do is set up iTunes to sync your email address information (on the sync “Info” tab) by clicking a checkmark into the “Sync Mail Accounts” and then selecting those that you want to sync in the list of accounts.

If you are not able to use this method to set up your email accounts, you will have to do it in “Settings” on your iPhone. It is just like adding accounts using your email client, just slower because of the hardware. One thing to remember is that you should not remove mail from the server for a POP account if you also want to get those emails on your main email computer. IMAP accounts will not give you this problem because they syncs automatically among clients on different devices. It may also be easier  to set up accounts like gmail and yahoo mail directly on the iPhone itself.
