2G iPod touch makes Game Center cut, iPhone 3G not
The mothership has listed out the iOS devices that will be compatible with its new Game Center mobile gaming platform. However, whereas the 2008 second generation iPod touch made the cut and the 2008 iPhone 3G has been left behind.
Apple’s updated its Game Center landing page to list the handheld devices that will be able to run on the mobile gaming platform. Unsurprisingly, the company’s aging first-generation iPhone and iPod touch didn’t make the cut. However, the iPhone 3G, which was still available for sale for $99 from Apple until June of this year, will also be left behind.
Given the ongoing issues the iPhone 3G has with iOS 4, problems that iOS 4.1 will resolve to an unknown degree, this is perhaps not surprising. The second generation iPod touch offered a 532MHz processor versus the 3G’s 412MHz and that’s probably the source the rub.
Game on [for less]
That said, if you’re looking for absolutely the cheapest way onto Game Center, then have a look at the refurbished second-generation 8GB iPod touch for $149. Also, Craigslist and eBay are lousy with 2G touches as Apple was giving them away as part of their annual back-to-school promo, which ended yesterday.
