T-Mobile getting iPhone 3GS, says Wired’s Anderson

September 8, 2010

A rumor with big import for Apple and the industry, until you consider the fact that it was delivered via Twitter and not the A-list editor’s own publication. Maybe the nation’s number four wireless carrier will offer it at a significant discount, that would be good, n’est pas?

A tweet by Chris Anderson — read it here — has set mobile tongues wagging, not just for the content but also because of the fact that he chose to tweet the news rather than publish it on Wired, which he helms.

So, does this tweeted rumor from an impeccable source that lacked the confidence to actually publish it have the ring of truth to you? It certainly sounds reasonable enough and, just as importantly, it seems consistent with the Apple we know and love.

However, how meaningful is the iPhone 3GS at, one presumes, $99 with two-year contract? It’s probably enough to attract existing T-Mobile customers in areas with strong coverage, but I doubt many others will feel the lure as this is after all last year’s iPhone…

What’s your take?
