More iPhones in the boardroom, especially after Verizon

September 13, 2010

The iPhone is continuing to make inroads in the business world, with more and more corporations either making the move or considering it. Big business approval for the iPhone could be huge for Apple.

Every time the monthly and quarterly smartphone sales reports come out, the RIM Blackberry has lost more ground to the iPhone and Android. Once the king of the corporation, the Blackberry seems to have been reduced to a jack, and may soon be playing the joker. Two very large employers, and former users of the Blackberry line, have said that they are moving away from the RIM phones. JP Morgan is reportedly testing both the iPhone and one or more Android phones. This account could be especially painful for RIM to lose, since the bank employs 220,000 people worldwide.

In addition to JP Morgan, UBS (Switzerland’s largest bank) is also considering the a move to iPhone or Android, according to a PhonesReview story. The Swiss giant employs 63,000 people, many of whom have taken advantage of the bank’s deal with RIM and carry Blackberry phones. Apple has greatly increased the appeal of its phones to large corporations by making them more manageable by IT departments and increasing the level of security available right out of the box. There are also apps available to beef up the native security of the Apple handset.

All of this would probably be helped by an Apple move towards Verizon. It is not only personal users that would prefer not to move to AT&T. Many businesses have also been burned by the dropped calls, poor coverage, slow data rates, and poor voice quality that many users ascribe to AT&T. Businesses would be happy to be rid or these problems as well, and having Verizon available as a carrier would move many businesses closer to the iPhone. Soon, it could be Apple and Android phones carving up the business territory once firmly controlled by the RIM Blackberry.
