New rumor says no Verizon iPhone soon
Just when you think that all the rumormongers have it right and the iPhone will soon be available on Verizon, along comes someone with a negative rumor containing good reasons why it will not soon be so.
We have been inundated with rumors over the last couple of weeks saying that Apple is preparing to manufacture a CDMA version of the iPhone, or perhaps a “world” model that will work on multiple network types. This phone, in CDMA trim, is always said to be headed for Verizon, since that is a change that Apple would need to make in its handset in order to be sold by Verizon. Some of the rumors even claim sources that say the orders have already been placed with Qualcomm for the chips that will drive this change.
Now, there is a report from the Sacramento Bee that tears these rumors apart at the foundations. The reports have Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg, at a New York investors conference, saying nothing at all about an iPhone on its current network, but hoping that Apple might build something for their 4G network, which won’t even be complete until sometime next year. Either Seidenberg is a master of intrigue and understatement, and is holding all of his cards close to his chest, or there is no great reason to expect a Verizon iPhone any time soon.
Among other things, Seidenberg said, “We don’t feel like we have an iPhone deficit. We would love to carry it when we get there, but we have to earn it. I think 4G will accelerate the process, and any other decisions Apple makes would be fine with us. Hopefully, at some point Apple will get with the program.” That does not sound like a man who thinks that he will have iPhones to sell in just a few months. Could it be that all of the rumors of the last month or so could come to nothing? Again?
