iAds: One-in-five’s pretty good, right?

September 28, 2010

At first blush, this is significantly lower than Apple’s mid-year 50 percent share prediction — hey, all you haters, here’s your chance to pile on. Still the company will have gone from zero to a major player that rivals Google in well under a year.

Back in June, Steve Jobs demonstrated iAds in iOS 4 and did something unusual for the company — told people how much money advertisers had committed to the program even before it shipped. Thereupon, the Apple CEO said iAds was on track at that early date to garner 48 percent of the market for the second half of this year.

Well, that was the promise, how is Apple expected to do in the real world?

Quoting IDC market data, BusinessWeek reports that Apple’s iAds is on track to take 21 percent of the 2010 mobile ad market. However, IDC doesn’t break out data just for the second half, though simply multiplying Apple’s expected take (a leap of faith) by two yields 42 percent for the second half, which that’s pretty darned close to mark and the year isn’t over yet.

“Apple’s acquisition of Quattro and Steve Jobs’s launch of iAd put a spotlight on mobile advertising,” said Paran Johar, chief marketing officer, Jumptap, an iAd competitor.

This is a major accomplishment for Apple, and the company has benefited from surging growth and smartphone laggards, such as Microsoft, which also runs its own mobile ad service.

And, by the way, Google’s share of mobile ads for the full year is expected to fall to 21 percent. So, no matter how you measure it, Apple’s doing pretty well…

What’s your take?
