And, why not the Android, too? To put it gingerly, the hordes of mostly Asian manufacturers that make OEM and branded smartphones running Google’s popular mobile OS are the same companies that Redmond hopes will make handsets that run their mobile OS — kind of underscores the absurdity of the display.

Things are not always what they seem with iPhone changes. For example, when the iPhone 4 and Facetime came out, the Facetime button replaced the mute button during calls. But hold is really still there.

How many apps are enough? Whereas the iTunes App Store purportedly contains more than 250,000, my personal library holds only 65, which is more than half again as large as the average iPhone owner’s collection. What’s in a number?

Apple has eased restrictions on the tools developers can use when creating apps for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad iOS ecosystem. This means that coders can write their apps using Flash, but still have to recompile them into iOS native code before submitting for App Store approval.

Steve jobs apparently woke up in a really good mood, and now it looks like Adobe’s Flash will once more be allowed in iPhone apps, AdMob advertising will be allowed again, and all is right with the world.

Apple has done it again with the iPhone 4, pulling a very cool feature out of thin air. This time it is the addition of an HDR (High Dynamic Ratio) function for the already cool iPhone 4 camera in the 4.1 update.

One of the longest running and, frankly, most salient criticisms of the App Store is the app approval process. Limitations on the tools developers can use have also drawn fire. With today’s new rules and guidelines, hopefully most or all of these issues will fade to black.

Having gone from an iPhone 3G directly to an iPhone 4, your author was amazed by the leap in GPS performance between the two Apple handsets. Suddenly, the phone all by itself offered a superior GPS experience.
