iPhone rumors abound despite Back to the Mac

October 20, 2010

Today is the day Apple is supposed to be going back to the Mac in San Francisco, but that is not stopping the tech press from collecting and publishing the latest rumors about the iPhone.

While Steve Jobs is on stage plugging the new MacBook air and iLife products, a substantial portion of the Apple world will be paying him precious little attention. That would be because when you talk about Apple these days, the focus is generally on the iPhone or the iPad, and there are rumors floating in from all sides about the iPhone, on a number of levels and a couple of different product types.

Of course, the CDMA iPhone rumors are flying wild, since that is the one that appears to be destined for Verizon in as little time as a few months. This is being called the iPhone 3,2 (don’t ask) but is actually an iPhone 4 in CDMA form that would be announced early in 2011. This one would be good for Verizon, as well as all the other CDMA-based wireless carriers worldwide and domestic. This phone is said to be in the final testing stages, according to a ComputerWorld article, giving the tech press hope that there will soon be a Verizon iPhone to rhapsodize about, especially if it will support both CDMA and GSM/HSPA.

The iPhone 5 rumors are also rife, with references to testing being done at the engineering evaluation level, which would be about right for a release in June 2011. One now has to wonder if the iPhone 5 will be a world phone, capable of being used on  both CDMA and GSM/HSPA networks. After all, if that part of the Verizon iPhone rumor is true, they will already have the technology ready to go.

It would seem that the iPhone 3.2 (CDMA version of the 4) will just be a stopgap, then, allowing Verizon and other CDMA carriers to sell the iPhone until the iPhone 5 is out, in all its world-phone glory. It would not make much sense to have a January update for the CDMA phone and a June update for the GSM phone, so they will probably be wrapped back into one when the iPhone 5 hits in the middle of 2011, and then we’ll be back on an annual iPhone update schedule for everyone.

Aren’t rumors fun? ;-D
