White iPhone bestows immortality?
The white iPhone rumors are flying again, this time because Apple has removed it from the iPhone pages on the Apple Web site. Never has so much been said about so small a deal. Or has it?
The white iPhone is dead! Long live the white iPhone! What’s up with all this white iPhone stuff? Apple has indeed removed the white iPhone handset from their online store. They have also been having trouble with the material used to make them, at least according to sketchy reports from Apple and another whole series of rumors in the tech press. I will admit that I am a black iPhone user who doesn’t quite get all the hubbub about the white iPhone variety. Then again, I don’t see my iPhone as a fashion accessory, so I might not be the one to ask about this.
But it is surely a big deal to a lot of people, at least according to a ComputerWorld story. Sometimes, between the rumors that the white iPhone will be the Verizon iPhone to the rumors that the white iPhone is dead, one expects to find rumors that the real scoop is that the white iPhone bestows immortality and as such only Steve Jobs has one. That would explain, once and for all, why the white iPhone has not yet been released and why it has been removed from the Apple Web site. We mere mortals were never intended to have a white iPhone 4.
Of course, it also begs the question of why our choices were only black and white, a seeming anachronism, and why the only choice now is black, the exact same choice that Henry Ford gave us in in 1918: “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black.” Were it not for what seems like the teeming thousands of after-market bumper makers (not a benefit enjoyed by the Model T) the iPhone would seem to be quite monochromatic until we turn it on, which may be the point. Compared to the mere outside of an iPhone, what’s inside is truly astonishing.
