iPhone on AT&T- the best on the worst

December 8, 2010

Once again, the long-time exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the United States, the venerable AT&T, has been named the worst wireless carrier in the U.S. How did the best phone pair up with the worst network?

Consumer Reports carries a very large stick in the U.S. When the consumer watchdog speaks, people listen. Current iPhone customers are certainly listening, now that Consumer Reports has put AT&T dead last among domestic wireless networks. The bad news for AT&T came after a survey conducted by the magazine to see how users rated the major American wireless networks. Try as they might, Consumer Reports could not find a single area in which AT&T excelled. Instead, all the way across the board, AT&T customers blasted their provider for a very long laundry list of problems.

The consumer reports poll queried the feelings of 58,000 readers, asking them to name and rate their wireless carriers in a number of service categories, according to a Daily Mail article. There may have been a surprise or two when the numbers were calculated, but AT&T’s position at the bottom was not one of them. Here’s how the major carriers fared, with their overall scores (out of 100) in parentheses:

U.S. Cellular Corp (82)
Verizon (74)
Sprint (73)
T-Mobile (69)
AT&T (60)

All of the other wireless carriers improved their ratings from last year, or at least stayed the same, with AT&T the only carrier that fell further from it’s dismal rating of last year. If it helps at all, a lot of people are not happy with their wireless service, which should be apparent from the low scored posted by all carriers. 82 out of 100, the best of the bunch, is hardly likely to get anyone a Phi Beta Kappa key, and the 60 points scored by AT&T might even get them thrown out of the Animal House.

So next time you happen to be down in your basement, take a good look around. AT&T is probably down there somewhere, just hanging out in the lowest position they could find.
