Munchy, munchy: Android users are data hungry [u]

December 9, 2010

There once was a time when the iPhone was the king of the data consumption hill. No more as a new study shows that those bad (mostly) boys carrying Androids, specifically the Samsung Galaxy and HTC Desire, have a big appetite for bits and bytes, though iPhone 4 owners are no slouches.

Arisa — yes, another web data metrics company — reports that some, though by no means all, Android phone users are using a lot of data. This doesn’t mean iPhone owners have gone a diet, it’s more that the new kids are bigger pigs.

“Smartphone subscriptions are rising and so too is subscriber appetite for mobile data. Since the launch of the iPhone3G, we’ve seen a multitude of popular new smartphones arrive on the market, successfully driving app and service usage,” said Michael Flanagan, CTO, Arieso. “It’s a trend that’s set to continue. Operators must now be able to quantify the impact of the devices they support, and how subscribers use them, and prepare their networks accordingly.”

And, here are some bullet points for you to digest:

      • iPhone 3G usage is the normalized baseline

      • iPhone 4 owners make 44 percent more data calls and use 41 percent more data
      — And, spend 67 percent more time connected to the network for data

      • Samsung Galaxy users typically upload 126 percent more data than iPhone 3G users

      • HTC Desire users download 41 percent more data than the baseline

That said, with wireless carriers offering some rather sweet deals to keep Android phone sales strong — lots of $50 off, buy one/get one deals — as well as this heavy data usage, you’ve gotta wonder how profitable Google-powered devices really are? And, then there’s the news that Android activations, right in the midst of the holiday shopping season of all times, have plateaued.

[u] Android’s Andy “doublespeak” Rubin has tweeted that 300K activations are happening every day.[u]

Thereupon, if you’re thinking about an Android smartphone, you might wanna want until after the holiday — there could to be a price war and the resulting bloodbath could be good for consumers…

What’s your take?

if you’re thinking about an Android smartphone its not good

  2. Bach:

Its not suprising. Android phones consumes 2 gigabit of data a month on its own not counting usage by the user. Seems the OS does some kind of sync and updating continousely. iPhone does not do this because it has iTunes to update the software. Android seems to be a data hog and battery hog.

  3. Kiwiiano:

I was looking at an Android smartphone this week and the shop assistant commented that it was worth signing up for the Telco’s extra data plan because “Android is constantly pushing and sucking stuff off the line, more than other OS’s”. Maybe that’s why….
