Ready to join up? Army to give grunts iPhones

December 26, 2010

Obama’s signature on the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy is hardly dry and the other comfortable shoe has fallen — today’s Army is said to be considering putting an iPhone or Android smartphone in the hands of every recruit. How much more metro can they go?

Army Times reports that Lt. Gen. Michael Vane, director, Army Capabilities Integration Center is considering a new policy to kit out every soldier with a smartphone. Moreover, the guys and gals in green might be able to pocket the product, iPhone or Android, of their choice with the monthly tab picked up by Uncle Sam.

“One of the options potentially is to make it a piece of equipment in a soldier’s clothing bag,” said Vane.

Army-issued smart phones are already in the schoolhouse and garrison, in the hands of some students at Fort Leonard Wood, MO; Fort Lee, VA; and at Fort Sill, OK, under an Army program called Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications. CSDA’s next step, already underway at Fort Bliss, Texas, is testing for the war zone.

Still unconfirmed at this time is whether soldiers will be heading into combat with Gucci or Versace bags…
