iPhone tops eBay’s most popular list

December 31, 2010

Although it was only an actual product for half of the year, the iPhone 4 product category was the most popular seller of all on all of eBay. You know it’s a great product when it unseats the Barbie as number one.

Everything-seller eBay has announced its “top shopped” list for the year now ending and, lo and behold, the iPhone 4 category is right at the top of the list. It would not have immediately come to mind that the iPhone 4 and its accessories were the most sought-after items on a site like eBay, but there you are. And as for unseating Barbie from the top spot, one can easily see that the iPhone has truly become a cultural icon in its own right. Just think, you may be carrying a collectible cultural icon in your pocket or purse right now, and that item may be an official antique in just short of 100 years!

Over the course of 2010, eBay moved 1.6 million iPhone 4-related things through its bid and buy network, easily beating out Barbie, which only moved 1.2 million items. In case you are wondering, according to  a TGDaily story, hot items numbers 3, 4, and 5 were military jackets, Hot Wheels and (gasp!) the Apple iPad. That’s two Apple products out of the top 5! One can just see Steve Jobs basking in the reflected eBay glory. Filling in the rest of the top ten were the Beatles, Silly Bandz, Alice in Wonderland and the New Orleans Saints.

How can we explain all of this? Well, Karen Sayah, eBay’s ‘trend expert’ says “Year after year, we see the hot trends, topics and pop culture obsessions translate into online sales. With more than 200 million daily live listings and a community of more than 93 million active users, eBay is uniquely positioned to take the pop culture pulse based on the millions of Marketplace purchases made each day.”

The iPhone as pop culture. There’s a book in this somewhere.
